Joseph Henry Plante, III, from Woonsocket, RI, peacefully passed away at his home in Narragansett on June 18, 2021, at the age of 78, following a courageous battle with leukemia that only strengthened his love of and appreciation for family. He was the son of the late Joseph H. Plante, Jr. and Florence Ferris Plante.
Joe is survived by his caring wife of 37 years, Carolyn, and by his children from his previous marriage to Obeline Plante, Katherine Plante of Fresno, CA, Matthew Plante and Ann of San Francisco, CA, John Plante of Los Angeles, CA., and Carolyn's children Elizabeth Winangun and Agus of Narragansett, RI, Kate Salvi and Jayson of Providence, RI, and Sarah Lefebvre and Anis Suwastawan of Quincy, MA. His role as Grandpa Joe to Alex and Indra Winangun, Anne Suwastawan, Eleanor, Lila, and Emmeline Plante has been his joy for the past 21 years. He is also survived by his sister Janet Gray, and his brother in law Charlie Gauvin. Chief among those waiting to welcome Joe into Heaven are his daughter Joan Elizabeth Plante, his sister Ann Plante Gauvin, and every dog he ever met.
Joe was the quintessential people person. Upon graduating from Bryant College, after serving in the United States Navy, he managed his Insurance, Banking and Auto Dealership customers in the same way he served his family: with respect, by prioritizing what was best for them, and always with a funny joke at the ready. Joe was always quick to rise to the occasion, lending a helping hand, hopping in the car to give someone a ride, welcoming friends with a smile and had an optimisim you seldom see.
Calling hours will be held on June 28 at the Russell J Boyle Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street in Providence from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Joe requests that you eat an ice cream cone, dance to Elvis Presley, hit a drive down the middle of the fairway, buy a BMW (a Mercedes will also do), tell your kids you love them, and treat people the way you want to be treated. In lieu of flowers donations to the Button Hole Golf Course and Teaching Center (https://buttonhole.org/about-us/). Burial will be private.
