Barbara M. (Tavares) Robertson, 92, of Providence, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 25, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Verzell James Robertson.
Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Robert Thomas and Hilda Josephine (Tavares) Hickman.
A member of the Chappaquiddick Wampanoag Indian Nation, her tribal name was Mother Owl.
Barbara was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1944. Barbara attended the New York Foundling Hospital Pediatric Nurse Training Program and graduated in 1949. It was there that she began her career of devotion to teaching and caring for children. Her daughters are examples of her pediatric knowledge and skills as they all had perfect attendance kindergarten thru high school. Barbara taught at the Carter Day Nursery School in Providence for over twenty five years before retiring. It was a lifelong commitment; evidenced by her volunteer work with the Salvation Army, various youth groups including the Sunbeams and Girl Guards, and soup kitchens. Barbara was also a member of the Cranston Senior Center for seventeen years.
She leaves three daughters, Barbara Easterling, Leslie R. Walton, and Penny Monk (John); six loving grandchildren, Aaron Robertson, John Monk II (Kristy) Jordan Monk (Kimberly), Geoffrey Easterling (Mikaela), Chad Walton and Paige Monk; and a great granddaughter, Quinn Monk. She was predeceased by a daughter, Wendy Robertson, a brother, Robert Thomas Hickman, Jr., and a sister, Ruthann Hull. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and dear friends.
The funeral service will be held Monday, at 12:00 noon, in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Burial will follow in The North Burial Ground, Providence. Relatives and friends are welcome and may call from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon prior to the service. Social distance and COVID 19 guidelines will be observed.
