William J. "Bill" Pedchenko, Jr., 70, retired Sergeant of the Providence Police Department, died on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was the beloved husband of Colleen M. (Norton) Pedchenko for the past 48 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late William J. and Mary B. (Corcoran) Pedchenko and son-in-law of the late Paul and Rose Norton.
Bill served our nation honorably as a combat Vietnam War Veteran in the United States Navy from February 1967 - July 1970. He was selected into the 39th Providence Police Academy and joined the Providence Police Department on April 18, 1971. He retired January 30th, 2004 after 33 years of dedicated public service to the City of Providence.
Bill was promoted to Sergeant in 1980 and throughout his career worked in many capacities, most notably patrol, detectives, narcotics and organized crime.
Bill’s most prestigious awards were: The Providence Police Department’s Rhea Archambault Award recipient in 1983. He was also awarded Detective of the Year in 1985 for the arrest of a serial killer.
Bill also was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 159th Session in 1989.
Post retirement, Bill worked security at Twin River Casino.
In addition to his wife Colleen, he leaves three sons, William J. Pedchenko, III and his wife Stacey, Paul Norton Pedchenko and his wife Kimberly, and Andrew J. Pedchenko and his fiance Sonya Fagundes; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Pedchenko, PPD and her fiance Joseph Arroyo; two brothers, Edward and James Pedchenko, and his lifelong friend, Eddie Abad. He was the brother of the late Russell Pedchenko, Joseph Pedchenko, Beverly Staskiewicz, Carol Barbery, and Barbara Langdeau. Bill was most proud of his 9 grandchildren Jenna Rose, William IV, Matthew, Isabella, Nicolas, Jackson, Gianna, Chloe “Girl” and Noah. A visit from one or all of them was a special day of fun for Bill. He was also affectionately known as “Uncle Boo” by his many nieces and nephews.
Bill was an avid fisherman inspired by his father as a young boy. Throughout his life with his son Andrew, Eddie Abad and many friends and family members his passion for fishing continued. When on land The Bruins, Patriots, Giants and Red Sox ruled.
Bill, we know your family will greet you with open arms. Rest in Peace. 10 - 4.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at 8:45 am, from Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 179 Academy Avenue, Providence. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Monday, October 28 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm.
