McKenna, George V., 92, of East Greenwich, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, May 26, 2018, surrounded by his wife and his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Catherine (McCormick) McKenna for the past sixty-nine years. He enjoyed his last days sharing a lifetime of stories about his childhood, military service, and his long and successful business career with his children and grandchildren.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late John and Melina (Brousseau) McKenna.
George served his country honorably in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman in the 6th Marine Corps Infantry Division from 1944 – 1945.
He owned and operated Morrison’s Paint & Wallpaper and later founded the Paint Shoppes. He dedicated over fifty years in the paint and wallpaper industry, was well respected, and held in high regard by friends and colleagues. He was a 30 year member of the Cranston Rotary Club and attended Bryant College.
In addition to his wife Catherine, he leaves his children, George (Claudia) McKenna, Mary (Al) Behbehani, John (Joanne) McKenna, Catherine (Patrick) Hanrahan, and Buddy McKenna, fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by siblings Fred, Arthur, Helen and Leo McKenna, Dorothy O’Brien, Mildred Muldowney and Alice Coffey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Fourth Avenue, East Greenwich to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial, with military honors, will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Tuesday, 5:00 – 8:00 pm in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (Rte. 117) Warwick.
