Esther Gorrie, 99 ½, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and close friends on October 2, 2019 at Brentwood Nursing Home where she resided for the last four years. She was the wife of the late John F. Gorrie Jr. Born in Providence she was the daughter of the late James and Annie (Leyden) Corry. She is survived by her two children, Gayle Gorrie Leonard and Jack Gorrie and his wife Cathy, her four grandsons, Brian, Kevin, Patrick Leonard and Robert Gorrie. She leaves behind two sisters, Helen Salois and Kathleen Corry who were inseparable until the end. She was the loving aunt of several nieces and nephews. Esther had a sister Rita Hall, brothers James and Raymond Corry who had predeceased her.
Esther was an avid card player for many years belonging to many Hi Lo Jack leagues and was very well known as a proficient card player. Over many years she made many younger friends who admired her expertise and who always wanted to be her partner.
Upon entering Brentwood Nursing Home, it didn't take Esther long to become a willing participant in all the activities, with BINGO being her favorite by far. She partook of almost every activity and remained a very social participant and also took great pride in making many friends during her stay there.
She was hostess/manager at the Quonset Officer's Club for many years and then went on to become manager of the Governor's Information Center for several years prior to her retirement.
Esther was a devout Catholic and loved and lived her faith; her kindness, friendliness, caring and concerned nature won her many hearts and many friends. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends but we know she is now watching over us and, hopefully, playing cards and bingo in heaven.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Brentwood Nursing Home for their care, love, devotion and friendship they developed with our mother. They could not have been more considerate and genuinely cared for our mother in her time spent there.
Her funeral will begin on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 8:45 am from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (Rt. 117) Warwick. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Gregory the Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick. Graveside Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich.
