Mary E.McConnell, 101, of Maude Street, died peacefully Tuesday Morning, January 1, 2013, at the Elmhurst Extended Care Facility. She was the wife of the late Frank B. McConnell.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Edward J. and Amy M. (Collins) Barton, she was a lifelong Providence resident.
Mary worked for Gibbons Candy Company, Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Company, and Fredot Enterprises. During World War II, she made vestments and altar cloths for the Chaplains in the service.
Known to many as “Aunt Mary”, she loved to knit and crochet, and may be remembered for the booth she had of knitted and crocheted items at the annual Blessed Sacrament Christmas Bazaar. She would also make hats for new babies and afgans for the Saint Francis Chapel.
Mary would like to be remembered for her faith in God and the Catholic Church.
She leaves nieces and nephews, Fred Ellery, Patricia Anthony, Joan Cook, Thomas, Edward and Pauline Barton, Nancy McEnery, and Leo Barton; and many grand and great nieces and nephews. She was a sister of the late George Barton, Dorothy Ellery and John “Leo” Barton, and aunt of the late George Barton, Jr., Marjorie Bordon and Robert Barton.
The funeral will be held Saturday, at 8:45 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Blessed Sacrament Church, Academy Avenue, Providence. Burial will be in Saint Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. Visiting hours Friday, 4 – 7 pm.
