Leon W. Saunders, Jr.

U.S. Veteran

Saunders, Leon W., Jr. age 84 of Cranston, passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Barbara A. (Geary) Saunders for 26 years.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Leon W. and Marion (Walsh) Saunders, Sr and the step son of the late C. Beatrice (Pearson) Saunders.

He was a resident of Cranston for the last 26 years.

Before retirement in 1989, Mr. Saunders was employed with B I F Industries as a purchasing manager for over 40 years.

He was an army veteran of WWII.

He was a former member of Swinging Squares, Square Dance Club, and a past president of the RI Federation of Square and Round dance clubs and was also an Usher for many years at the Church of Blessed Sacrament.

Leon was also a 1945 graduate of La Salle Academy, where he was still very active attending monthly luncheons with his class mates.

Besides his wife he is survived by 3 sons, Stephen T. Saunders of North Kingstown, Leon E. Saunders of Johnston and Christopher M. Saunders of West Warwick, 3 daughters Linda M. Saunders of Laguna Niguel, CA, Lori A. DeSimone of Providence and Patricia A. Malloy of St. Cloud, FL, a step son Kevin M. O’Brien of Johnston and step daughter Cheryl O’Brien of Gainesville, GA. He was the brother of Charles Saunders of East Providence , William Saunders of West, VA, Dorothy Drapeau of Seekonk, MA, Veronica Feeney of Riverside , grandfather of 7 and great-grandfather of 2. He was also the brother of the late Rowena Saunders.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:30 am from The Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home 331 Smith St., Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in The Church of Blessed Sacrament, Academy Ave, Providence.

Burial with military honors will be in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Visiting hours Friday 4 – 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to; La Salle Academy Scholarship Fund 612 Academy Ave, Providence RI 02908 in Leon’s memory will be appreciated.
